Nile red is a lipophilic dye. Nile red stains intracellular lipid droplets yellow. In most polar solvents, Nile Red does not fluoresce; however, in lipid-rich environments it fluoresces strongly, emitting colors ranging from deep red to deep gold. The dye is highly solvochromic, with emission and excitation wavelengths that vary with solvent polarity, and no fluorescence at all in polar media.
Nile red has applications in cell biology, it can be used as a membrane dye, can be easily observed using epifluorescence microscopy, and its excitation and emission wavelengths are often shared with red fluorescent proteins. Nile red has also been used as part of a sensitive detection process for microplastics in bottled water. Furthermore, Nile Red is an excellent candidate for the fabrication of membranes for different sensors to detect environmental changes such as taste, gas, pH, etc.
