Underwater Optics

When evaluating aquatic life, a deeper comprehension of underwater optics and imaging in open water is essential. Studying the effects of changing environmental conditions will help us better understand how life on land is affected by these changes. Future changes to the undersea environment can be predicted more precisely because to technological advancements. Due to the seawater's absorption and scattering characteristics, it has always been challenging to gain enough vision with underwater optical imaging.

Materials

The wavelength of operation will determine the material choice for underwater optics. It is common to employ BK7, sapphire, PMMA, and fused silica. PMMA is light and can be manufactured in high volume for consumer applications. BK7 offers an affordable alternative for working in the visible range. Fused silica is suitable for operation at wavelengths lower than 400 nm. Sapphire can be utilized in architectural applications that are exposed to extreme pressure.

Dome Windows

A typical and affordable approach is to safeguard the camera by encasing it in a waterproof casing. The field of vision of the camera is often less when flat windows are used underwater. Refraction during the transition between water, glass, and air is to blame for this. We can choose to use a domed window.

Because of the dome's form, light that would typically be incident on a window surface may go through it without being refracted, eliminating distortion and keeping the same field of view as when operating in air. Utilizing a dome window has the drawback of altering the focal length of the lens.

Illumination

The use of a polarization-based system is one technique to enhance visual contrast in an underwater setting. This lighting scheme uses a wide area of polarized light to illuminate the scene while looking at the same area with the camera and an additional polarizer.
