ND:YAG Laser Line Components

Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG; Nd:Y3Al5O12) is a crystal that is used as an illumination medium for solid-state lasers. In the main crystal structure of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG), the dopant, tri-ionized neodymium, Nd(III), typically replaces a small fraction (1%) of the yttrium ion because the two ions are similar in size. Similar to the red chromium ion in a ruby laser, the neodymium ion generates the laser activity in the crystal.
