Nonlinear and Laser Crystals

Different optical disciplines employ a variety of optical materials. Because of their unique features, optical crystalline materials, primarily single-crystal materials, are required for a variety of applications.

  • Crystalline materials with less lattice symmetry, such as triangular, tetragonal or monoclinic crystals, can exhibit χ(2) nonlinearity. This is primarily utilized for light modulators as well as nonlinear frequency conversion.
  • A variety of crystalline materials can be used as laser crystals, i.e. as host materials for laser-active dopants. They typically have short gain bandwidths, decent thermal conductivity, and relatively high transition cross sections. They frequently permit larger doping concentrations as well. In other circumstances, birefringence is also helpful, for example for avoiding depolarization losses.
