Er3+, Yb3+ co-doped phosphate glass is a commonly used active medium for lasing in the "eye-safe" spectral range of 1.5–1.6 µm. Phosphate glasses combine the long lifetime of the lasing level on 4I13/2 Er3+ with the low lifetime of the 4I11/2Er3+ level that resonates with the Yb3+ 2F5/2 excited state.
